Things to Do in Galena, Illinois

About Galena

Galena, Illinois is one of the most historic and scenic destinations in the Midwest. Visitors come from across the country to experience the rolling hills, preserved 19th-century architecture and rich cultural heritage that make this town unique.

Thousands of years ago glaciers shaped the landscape surrounding Galena, creating the rugged cliffs and beautiful valleys that visitors enjoy today. Native Americans once called this land Manitoomie, meaning “Sacred Ground”, and early settlers later discovered rich deposits of lead ore that helped the town grow into an important mining center.

In the early 1800s Galena quickly became one of the most prosperous towns in the region. Steamboats traveled up the Mississippi River bringing traders, miners and entrepreneurs seeking opportunity. By the late 1820s Galena was thriving, and impressive historic buildings began appearing throughout the town.

Galena also played an important role during the Civil War. The city supplied lead for ammunition and became home to nine Union generals, including Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States. Today his historic home remains one of the most popular attractions in Galena.

During the 1960s visitors rediscovered Galena’s beauty and historic charm. Today the town is recognized as a National Historic District and attracts travelers year-round who come to explore museums, historic homes, antique shops, restaurants and outdoor recreation.
